Materials

Everything we print and frame is made by hand in our Dromana workshop. We use the same printing stocks and framing materials for an online print on demand order as we do for a gallery commission.

Print stocks

We print on ILFORD media using archival pigment inks.

Satin canvas

ILFORD GALERIE Decor Canvas Glossy, 400 gsm

A cotton and polyester blend canvas with a satin sheen that lifts colour and holds deep blacks. The nanoporous coating resists cracking and scratching, which matters when a canvas is stretched around a frame.

Best for photographs and bold, colourful artwork where you want the image to carry.

Matte canvas

ILFORD GALERIE Decor Canvas Bright White, 380 gsm

The same cotton and polyester blend with a matte surface and a brighter white base. No sheen, so the canvas texture reads more clearly and there is no glare from a window or a downlight.

Best for reproductions of paintings and drawings, and for rooms with a lot of light.

Satin paper

ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl, 310 gsm

A resin coated photographic paper with a pearl surface and a high dynamic range coating. This is the stock that looks and feels like a proper photograph. Sharp, clean, wide colour gamut, and the pearl surface keeps glare and fingerprints down.

Best for photography, portraits and anything with fine detail.

Matte paper

ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Cotton Sonora, 320 gsm

100% cotton rag with a smooth matte surface and no optical brighteners, so it will not shift colour under different lighting or yellow the way brightened papers can. This is a fine art stock and it is the heaviest paper we print on.

Best for fine art reproduction and black and white work.

Canvas finishes

Unframed

Your print arrives rolled in a tube with a margin around the image so a framer has something to work with. Ready to stretch or frame yourself.

Stretched

Stretched by hand over 38 mm deep finger jointed NZ Pine stretcher bars, FSC certified, kiln dried for warp resistance and braced where needed. The image wraps the edge, so there is no white border on the sides. Hanging wire attached, ready to go on the wall.

Stretched and framed

Stretched as above, then set into a timber float frame with a shadow gap between the canvas edge and the frame. The canvas appears to float inside the frame rather than sit behind it. Wire attached, ready to hang.

Float frame profile 55 mm (H) × 33 mm (W). Shows a 10 mm face from the front with a 5 mm shadow gap.

Paper finishes

Unframed

Rolled in a tube with a margin around the image. Ready to frame yourself.

Framed

Your print is framed behind glass in a timber moulding, full bleed to the edge of the frame. If you have added a printed border, that border is part of the print and sits inside the frame as you saw it on screen. Wire attached, ready to hang.

As standard we supply a 20 mm wide × 40 mm deep frame. For pieces over 1 m² we upgrade the frame to 30 mm wide × 40 mm deep.

Regular glass is supplied as standard. To upgrade your glass to UV protective glass please contact us for a custom order.

Frames

All four are sustainably sourced oak, PEFC certified, finished in our workshop.

Oak

Natural Australian Oak with a warm open grain and clean lines.

Black

Painted oak. A three stage sand, paint and seal process, open grain finish, UV resistant clear coat.

White

Painted oak. Same three stage process and clear coat.

Blackwood

Stained oak. A three stage sand, stain and seal process giving a rich deep brown, with a UV resistant clear coat over the top.

Custom framing

The online configurator covers the sizes, stocks and frames we run every day. If you want something outside that, a different moulding, a mount, museum glass, an unusual size, get in touch and we will quote it.
